An extender, not a generator

This is worth being clear about, because the two get confused. An image generator makes a new picture from a description. An image extender keeps the photograph you already have and only paints what lies beyond its edges. Here, your uploaded pixels are composited back over the generated canvas at the end, so the subject you photographed is never reinterpreted, restyled or redrawn.

Underneath it uses a model built specifically for filling in masked regions of a real image rather than dreaming up new ones. The scene is also read first by a vision model, so the extension continues your lighting, weather, palette and setting instead of making a generic guess.

What you can control

• Target size. Any preset, or a custom canvas up to 4096 pixels a side.
• Anchor. Where your photo sits in the new canvas — centre to grow in all directions, or bottom, top, left or right to push the new space one way.
• Prompt preset. Natural keeps the extension faithful to the photograph; cinematic and clean push it slightly.
• Vignette. Optional subtle edge darkening.

What it costs, and when you pay

The order matters: generation happens first, you see a blurred preview of the actual result for free, and you can regenerate as many times as you like at no cost. Where it does well, and where it struggles

Extensions succeed most reliably when the edges of your photo are continuations of something simple — sky, water, foliage, sand, a plain wall, an open floor. They struggle with strong architectural lines that have to stay straight for a long way, dense crowds, and text or signage near the edge, which tends to come back as convincing-looking nonsense.

The other factor is how much you are asking for. Extending an image by a third is close to reliable; doubling its area means most of the final picture is invented, and that is when results can read as a collage instead of one photograph. Free regeneration exists precisely for that.

What is AI image extension?

Also called outpainting: an AI model generates new content beyond the borders of an existing photo so it fills a larger canvas. The original image is preserved and only the surrounding area is created.

Does it alter my original photo?

No. Your uploaded image is composited back over the generated canvas unchanged, so the subject you photographed is never redrawn or restyled.

Will it add people to my photo?

It will not invent people who were not there. If someone is cut off at the edge of the frame the AI may complete them, but empty background is never populated with strangers.
